Day 10 Sharm El-Sheikh

14-Sep

This will be a short post 😊, we are now settled for two days (3 nights) in this resort right next to the Red Sea. We will do a desert safari tomorrow so I will post that experience later and add some pictures here from the resort as well.

The name Sharm El Sheikh means “Sheikh’s Bay” in Arabic. The city takes its name from the bay that surrounds it, which in the past was a stopping place for caravans travelling along the Silk Road. According to legend, the bay was discovered by a Bedouin sheikh who settled here with his tribe. The place was given the name Sharm el Sheikh in honour of the sheik. Today, the city has become a world-famous tourist destination, but still retains the charm of its thousand-year history.

Mohammed reached out to us in the afternoon, if we were interested to go to the markets in Sharm El Sheikh. Most of us did, so he organised two shuttle basses to get us there after dinner. The market is on till early in the morning. There was some serious negotiating going on between the ladies on our tour and their spouses about the time we would spent on the market. After some back and forth, we agreed on 11:30, I think most ladies wanted to stay till closing time.

I just wanted to buy a beer or something to drink so wandered around and shot some pictures, till a barber approached me if I wanted a haircut. And yes, it was time to get that sorted so I got in the chair, interesting experience, particularly when he asked if I wanted the hair removed from my ears and trim the eyebrows. When I say asked, it was more him pointing at my ears and me nodding yes. He used a thread to do all that and that was something I never experienced before. I also got a head scrub, head massage and all kinds of oils on my hair. All that for USD7 😁

  1. Arno, it was such a pleasure to read through your blog and re-live the shared experience of our tour through
Egypt and Jordan. Well done! I’m just getting around to creating a photo album so that I’ll have a story of all that we saw. The sites were simply amazing and we so enjoyed our time away with our group. Cheers!!
