Saturday 18-Jan

We arrived early in Esperance and the place we picked to stay for the next 3 nights only opens at 2 Pm. So we decided to park the caravan and walk around town and get a coffee. They say that Esperance has the best beaches in Australia, with the most vibrantly blue water you’ll ever see in your life, Esperance truly is – out of the way and out of this world. So we will have to explore and see if this is true 😁. But first here are some images of Esperance.

Once we were able to park our caravan on the Overflow Parking space we took the car over the Ocean drive. The beaches are amazing and we picked one for a little test of the water.

Sunday 19-Jan

Yesterday we discovered west of Esperance and today we will be going east. A beautiful drive recommended to us by a friendly  person at the information centre.

Our first stop was to see Stonehenge. It is a full-size replica of Stonehenge in the United Kingdom as it would have been when it was built. It consists of a solid pink granite structure weighing 2,500 tonnes. Stonehenge is aligned to the winter and summer solstice, making it a spectacular event to be witnessed.

We continued on to Cape Le Grand national park and stopped at places like Lucky Bay, Thistle Cove, Hellfire Bay and Frenchman peak to name a few. We spent some time on the beach and were amazed by the colours of the water and the sand.

We had lunch in the Condingup Tavern  another recommendation and worth the drive. The landscape is very different of what we’ve seen on the Nullarbor with lots of green for as far as the eye can see.

Before we headed back to the caravan we stopped at a fish tannery. Yep, they make fish leather out of various fish skins like shark, barramundi and many more. We watched an introduction video and the owner showed us how it is done. Quite amazing, we learnt again something new.

We had booked a place for dinner and when we arrived someone shouted Arno! We were both amazed but we bumped in another couple of friends we know through Kendy and Brad. We had a quick catchup with Kim and Ursula (whom we haven’t seen for 10 years) and hope to see them again soon in Tasmania. Sometimes the world looks like a small place 😊

Monday 20-Jan

We decided to stay and extra day in Esperance. So we will be here till Wednesday. Arno had to fill a gas bottle, wash the car (again) and empty out the toilet while Jen was getting pampered in town, so an extra day is nice to have.

Arno also went to the Esperance museum that has an extensive collection of objects and displays including maritime, vehicles and machinery, and many things we always encounter in country museums like old type writers, telephone systems and even some old organs.

This museum is also known for the world’s most display of NASA Skylab memorabilia, they collected many parts that crashed down around this area with the bulk around Balladonia.

The museum was opened in 1976 by Orlando Stuart, a previous president of the Esperance Shire Council. The Museum Park was the towns original railway marshaling yards, and the main building, constructed soon after the turn of the century, was the goods shed and office.

We had a coffee in town and went to pick up the bikes, afterwards we took the bikes out for a nice run along the coastline, on what looked, a brand new bike path. The temperature is a nice 24 degrees and it seems the wind is not as strong as yesterday. As we mentioned before the coastline here is just amazing and doing this track on our bikes gave us another great experience.

Tuesday 21-Jan

A relaxing day at the Overflow, we had a long chat with our Canadian friends and it was great to catch up again. Arno went to play golf at the Pink Lake Golf Course. Very hilly but the greens looked very good. On his way back he had a quick look at the Pink Lake, no longer pink but this was a big attraction about 10 years ago.

We will leave Esperance tomorrow to our next destination.
