16 – July<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First stop today was Parry Lagoon, and I can tell you, if we had the time, we could have sat there all day. There were so many birds of every imaginable plumage and even a few crocodiles to admire. Jimmy spotted a monster Saltwater Crocodile, which he estimated to be at least 5.5 to 6 metres long. Luckily for us, it was on the other side of the lagoon. Then another one climbed out of the water and settled in the sun to warm up. It was a bit smaller, but still a good 3.5 metres long. Lots of ducks wandered around, seemingly undeterred by the crocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We made a quick stop to enjoy the view over M<\/strong>aggie’s Valley<\/strong>, named after Margaret “Maggie” Lilly (n\u00e9e Nicholson), who became the first person to drive a motor vehicle, a Chevrolet, into this rugged area in the late 1920s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next was the obligatory group photo in front of the Big Croc in Wyndham before continuing on to Kununurra, where we would be staying for the next two nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the way we stopped at the Five Rivers Lookout, high on the Bastion Range overlooking Wyndham. From here you can see where five mighty Kimberley rivers, the Ord, Forest, King, Durack and Pentecost, come together before flowing into Cambridge Gulf. The surrounding mangrove swamps and mudflats are spectacular, and you can also see the Port of Wyndham, from where iron ore and other products are shipped from the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A very large campsite awaited us, and our tents were already set up. We are getting the hang of this camping routine now. First unload the truck, then the bags and swags, roll everything out, set up for the night, and by the time that is done, it is almost time for sunset drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campsite was beside a large lake that was home to a resident freshwater crocodile known as Gummie. At around 60 years old, he is something of a local celebrity. Freshwater crocodiles are much smaller than their saltwater cousins and are generally not aggressive towards people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick update on the knee: yes, it is definitely more painful today. It is not stopping me from doing anything, but I am being a bit more careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can see on the image below, the crossing count is at 80 already \ud83d\ude0a The score is kept on the front windscreen of the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
