Another early rise. Today was mostly a driving day, with a few stops along the way. We travelled around 280 km, but it was a very rough drive. The corrugations were deep, and we were all being shaken around inside the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first stop was to look at some Aboriginal rock art. The Wandjina are powerful Rain Maker spirits associated with the north-west Kimberley region of Western Australia. Their distinctive images, painted in red and white ochre on rock galleries and in caves throughout the region, are among the most important examples of Aboriginal rock art in Australia. The paintings mark significant ceremonial sites and were traditionally repainted every decade or so to keep the images fresh and maintain their spiritual significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then stopped to see the Gibb River. Funnily enough, the Gibb River Road never actually crosses the river. The river was named after Andrew Gibb Maitland, the Government Geologist of Western Australia, and the road later took its name from the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Gibb River, we stopped at both the Durack River and the Pentecost River. This area is very dry during the dry season, but there were still plenty of creeks and rivers with water in them. We had a competition going among the group to guess how many river crossings we would complete during the trip. By today, we had already crossed more than 50 rivers and creeks, with plenty more still to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had lunch at Ellenbrae Station, famous for its delicious homemade scones. We also had another competition: how many scones had they sold during the last five-month tourist season? Michael won by guessing 22,999, just 84 short of the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also stopped at Bindoola Falls. Although the falls were dry, we spotted our first freshwater crocodile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the drive, we made random stops whenever Kaz spotted an interesting flower, tree or anything else she thought might interest us. We would all jump out of the truck to learn more about the amazing flora and landscapes the Kimberley has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrived at Home Valley Station, where we all enjoyed a good shower and a drink at the bar. Later, we gathered for our traditional sunset drinks while taking in the magnificent view over the Pentecost River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner was once again perfectly prepared by Kaz and Jimmy, and after another day filled with new experiences, we all headed to bed early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
