Another very early start, and our guides told us that this would be the trend for the next 12 days. We all had to get up at 5:30 am and be on our way by 7:00 am. That also meant packing up our swags (more on those later) and taking down our tents. We all managed it, and our tour guides were impressed that we were all ready to go by 6:30 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Swags<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the next 11 nights we would sleep in our swags, which we unfolded once we arrived at camp and rolled up again before placing them back on the roof of the truck when we left. Each of us had our own swag for the duration of the trip. They are essentially rugged sleeping bags with a pillow, mattress and sleeping bag inside. They were surprisingly comfortable and kept us warm during the night. While daytime temperatures in the Kimberley easily exceeded 30 degrees, overnight temperatures dropped below 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the remaining nights, the tents would already be set up, so all we had to do was collect our swag and unroll it inside the tent, ready for bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dalmanyi Gorge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our first stop of the day was Dalmanyi Gorge, where we hiked into the gorge to see the waterfall, have lunch and enjoy a swim. For the hike, we followed a dried-up riverbed that would have been flowing with water only a few months earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are basically two seasons in this part of the world: the dry season from May to November and the wet season from December to April. You definitely do not want to be on the Gibb River Road during the wet season, as it becomes a muddy mess. The region also experiences many cyclones during the wet season, which is another good reason to stay away at that time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manning River<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After leaving the gorge, we climbed back into the truck and continued on to our next campsite, where we would be staying for two nights. We enjoyed our second sunset drinks beside the river before another excellent dinner prepared by Kaz and Jimmy. We finished the evening with a few more drinks around the campfire before heading to bed, tired but very satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
